Academics at Sidney C. Huntington School
We have made great strides toward academic excellence at Sidney C. Huntington School.
The school has been fully accredited since 1980. Every teacher in SHS teaches in his or her field of endorsement.
Sidney C. Huntington School student academic achievement as measured on the state mandated High School Graduation Qualifying
Exam (HSGQE) is considerably higher than the average rural student and is at or above state averages in Alaska.
To date, 100% of Sidney C. Huntington School juniors have passed both the reading and math sections of the HSGQE and
79% of the juniors have already passed all three sections of the HSGQE. The sophomore scores are also
really encouraging; 100% of the sophomores passed all three section of the HSGQE on the first attempt. This
is a first since the inception of the HSGQE for Sidney C. Huntington School sophomore students.
Sidney C. Huntington School’s results on the Standards Based Assessment (SBA) tests are very strong. SHS elementary
school students (grades 3-6) performed exceptionally well on the Standards Based Assessments; 95% of the elementary
students were proficient or advanced on the language arts subtest; 93% of the elementary students were proficient
on the writing subtest; and 79% were proficient or advanced on the math subtest. These are strong percentages.
The scores signify that Sidney C. Huntington Students made exceptional gains in the areas of reading
and writing across our K-12 curriculum.
