The Sidney C. Huntington School staff welcomes you
The Sidney C. Huntington School was named for renowned Galena elder Sidney Huntington, who has worked tirelessly to
support and encourage education for the children living in Alaska Bush villages. He has served on the state board of fish
and game and has been honored by state governors and the Alaska Federation of Natives.
Our school has eight certified teachers in kindergarten through sixth grade, and 13 certified teachers in middle and high
school. Most of our teachers spend their career living and working in the community of Galena, providing our
school with a stability that is rarely found in rural schools.
According to the 2009 Report Card to the Public, "Sidney C. Huntington School’s primary focus is
the continued improvement of student achievement and learning. To meet that goal, all staff
development and curriculum development workshops focused on significant aspects related to increasing
teacher quality that directly impacts student achievement and learning. Seven SHS teachers attended
PEAK Learning Systems summer institutes in Vail, Colorado with four colleagues from the Galena Interior
Learning Academy. Furthermore, all staff participated in on-site individual and small group PEAK
Learning workshops that focused on the development and implementation of researched based teaching
and assessment strategies that have proven to improve student learning and achievement."
